Zoo Regional Miguel Alvarez del Toro (Chiapas)
Walking along the walkways of the zoo is transported to a jungle tour in the city, offering plenty of plants, animals, sounds, smells, shapes and colors. Green is the common denominator of ZOOMAT zoo which has a peculiar history since it opened its doors in the small ecological reserve Zapotal, east of the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez in Chiapas. At this zoo is known as the Night House, being the only displaying nocturnal animals.
One characteristic is that animals are exhibited only in the state of Chiapas. Has more than 800 animals representing about 250 species in the lowland of Zapotal, reserve of 100 hectares, of which 25 actually occupies the zoo and other ecological buffer zone. Some animals are in open spaces, taking advantage of the natural condition of the land, making their development in their natural habitat. Animals exhibited great ecological importance among which are the harpy eagle (Harpy arpija), tapir (Tapirus bairdii), river otter (Lontra longicaudis), howler monkeys or roarers (Alouatta palliative A.pigra), three species of crocodilians from Chiapas, jaguar (Phantera onca), the quetzal (Pharomacrus moccino), the Ocellated (Agriocharis ocellata) and Peacock (Orepahasis Guan), bird is the symbol of IHN.
